First Aid Training

First Aid Training

First Aid is a key skill for all adult volunteers and young people involved in scouting and everyone should have the opportunity to learn and continually develop this skill.

First Response is the scouts own First Aid course and forms part of the Growing Roots training pathway for adult volunteers.

Young people also have the opportunity to undertake First Aid training through the Emergency Aid Staged Awards and Explorer Scout Young Leader Module K.

First Response

First response is 1 day training course that trains adult volunteers to the required standard to be able to deal with basic injuries and incidents during activities (This course is not sufficient for individuals holding adventurous activity permits / NGB Qualifications – please see 16hr First Aid Courses below). This is a national scheme and transfers between Districts & Counties.

To complete this training, you must either:

  • Complete a First Response Course delivered by an accredited First Response Trainer
  • Recognition of Prior learning (RPL)*

*If you hold an external qualification, this will be reviewed by a member of the First Aid Training team against the course requirements of First Response. If the course does not fully meet the requirements, the team will direct the individual to complete top-up training as appropriate. A course certificate by a recognised provider or course transcript signed by the tutor is to be provided to gain RPL.

Certificates are to be sent to the first aid team on firstaid@shropshirescouts.org.uk for assessing and to be credited on the ‘My Learning’ system.

16 Hour Outdoor First Aid

This is a full 16 hour First Aid Qualification that meets the minimum requirements of Scouts POR for adventurous Activities and National Governing Bodies such as Mountain Training, BCAB etc. This course will teach trainees how to deal with injury and incidents in remote sites and how to manage casualty care until professional help arrives. A 16 hour first aid course is also the minimum first aid qualification required to volunteer with the County First Aid Training Team.

To complete this training, you must:

  • Attend a recognised 16hr first aid course delivered by an accredited provider – courses can be organised by Shropshire Scouts, subject to demand.

Certificates are to be sent to the first aid team on firstaid@shropshirescouts.org.uk for assessing and to be credited on the ‘My Learning’ system.

Emergency Aid / Young Leader Module K

The county first aid training team can also support delivery of Emergency Aid stage awards & Young Leader Module K training. The team can arrange visits to deliver training at your section/unit to young people, however we are also on hand to provide the skills to leaders to deliver stage 1-3 independently.

*Stage 4 and ESYL Module K courses must be delivered by a County First Aid Trainer, on completion of these course all participating trainees will receive a certificate validating there competency.
